JALT
What is JALT?
JALT (the Japanese Association for Language Teaching) is currently offering special membership for JETs at 6,500 yen per year (normally 10,000). The Sendai chapter is fairly active, and it can be a good place to learn about teaching and make some contacts outside of the JET community.
Why would I want to join?
Basically JALT can be a good way to learn about teaching and showing that you are serious about it. It also allows you to meet a lot of the "lifers" in Sendai. Most members either work at universities or private high schools, although a few ALTs occasionally come to meetings. If you join, you will also receive the JALT publications "the Language Teacher" (monthly, often has interesting articles on teaching methodology) and "the JALT Journal" (annual, slightly more academic).
I would recommend joining JALT if:
- you are interested in teaching and learning more about the theory behind it
- you are planning to stay in the Sendai area after JET (most good jobs here are word of mouth and gained by introduction)
- you are close enough to make it into Sendai once a month without spending too much time or money (meetings are held on the last Sunday of every month)
